Tenofovir pharmacological effects

This product is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor that inhibits reverse transcriptase in a manner similar to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and thus has potential anti-HIV-1 activity. Tenofovir disoproxil, the active ingredient of this product, inhibits viral polymerases by binding directly to natural deoxyribose substrates and terminating the DNA strand by inserting DNA. In vitro, this product is effective against a variety of viruses, including those resistant to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. In vitro, the product has an IC50 of 1.6 micromolar for wild-type HIV-1, 4.9 micromolar for HIV-2 and 1.1 micromolar for HBV.
